MANITOBA TRANSIT HERITAGE ASSOCIATION
1934 Dodge / Lawrie model LS 35
Bus #501 was purchased by the Winnipeg Electric Company in 1934 and was originally numbered 171 in the fleet.
The unit remained in transit service until 1947 when it was sold to E.J. Casey Shows for a circus truck.
Recovered in 1994 by the MTHA for restoration.
Historical Note: Robert “Bob” Lawrie, a Scottish immigrant, had formed the Winnipeg-based wagon and carriage company bearing his last name in 1890. Lawrie wanted to take advantage of the transition to internal combustion engine powered vehicles and hit upon the idea of taking an existing automobile chassis and engine and then building a body to suit the needs of his customers. In effect, he was reinventing his carriage and wagon making business in order to adapt to the growing needs of the public transportation sector.
In 1909 he moved his production plant to 583 Wall Street, across from the Ford Motor Company's assembly plant on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
